The Japanese publisher Hasegawa (1853–1938) specialised in books on Japanese subjects written in European languages and is regarded as the most important publisher in the field of the Japanese art of crepe paper production (Chirimen gami-e). He had his books (Chirimen-bon) printed with colour woodblock prints by renowned Japanese artists. In this process, the paper is stretched and glued onto a wooden block, then printed, stencilled or painted, creating this texture when the paper is removed. It was a lucrative way of producing large quantities of books.
