Elbert was a geologist, geographer and explorer. In 1909–10, he led the ‘Sunda Expedition’ organised by the Society for Geography and Statistics in Frankfurt am Main to Lombok, south-eastern Celebes (including the islands of Tukang-besi, Muna and Butan), Kabaëna, Sumbawa, Flores and Wetar, with the aim of conducting geographical research into the zoogeographical boundary line between the Indian and Australian faunas established by Wallace, the validity of which had already been called into question by recent research as early as 1890.” (NDB)
