The British mountaineer Whymper (1840–1911) was a renowned mountaineer and wood engraver, and was among the first to climb the Matterhorn and Chimborazo in the Andes. He experienced the loss of fellow mountaineers at first hand and had to contend with criminal investigations. Following the end of the golden age of alpinism, he devoted himself to writing and studied high-altitude physiology through observations of his own body. The second volume contains descriptions of insects from the region. Whymper had collected around a thousand specimens, which are described here and partly illustrated. – Partly uncut.
