Albert Tafel (1876–1935) was one of the most prominent German explorers and travelers in Asia, particularly in northeastern Tibet. He took part in Filchner’s expedition through northern China and eastern and northeastern Tibet in 1904–1905; afterward, he traveled through the region again on his own. He explored the headwaters and upper reaches of the Yellow River, parts of Inner Mongolia, Lake Kuku-Nor, the Tsaidam Basin, the Marco Polo Mountains, and the Kumbum Monastery. — “A masterpiece of the highest order.
