(Scuffed and bumped; corners partly split. Vol. II has scuffing on the front cover. The front hinges of vols. I and III are broken; there is a tear in the binding at the upper head of vol. III. Endpapers show signs of glue staining. Browned and, in places, showing traces of browning from inserted papers. With a few marginal notes and underlinings in pencil.)
A comprehensive account by the German Iranist Friedrich von Spiegel (1820–1905) of the geography, history, religion, literature and culture of ancient Iran. As a professor of Oriental languages at the University of Erlangen, he devoted himself in particular to the Avesta, the Old and Middle Iranian languages, the Zoroastrian religion and the study of Iranian antiquities.
