Redinger of Natal, 1 plate, 1 partly coloured map and numerous illustrations in the text. X pp., 403 pp., 1 blank page. Original red linen binding with gold-stamped title on the spine, front cover illustration and blind-stamped borders on the covers.
(The cover is scuffed and bumped; the spine is more heavily discoloured by sunlight. The upper head is almost entirely missing. The pages are slightly yellowed; the binding is partly loose and shows minimal foxing.)
Mendelssohn II, p. 315 – With a handwritten dedication in English by a previous owner dated 1857: “To Claudia, Eleanor, Lara & Mary from their cousins Walter and Alfred Bartham? with their best wishes. September 1857.” and a handwritten ownership entry from 1929. First edition: “During his four-year stay in Natal, J. Shooter took great pains to acquire detailed knowledge of the people’s way of life, and the results of his research were supplemented by information from the works of Döhne, Isaacs and others, as well as from the manuscripts of the ‘unfortunate traveller Green’ and by statements made by Mr Fynn before a special commission.”
