The three Schlagintweit brothers – three of Joseph Schlagintweit’s five sons, namely Robert, Hermann and Adolf – are known as explorers, mountaineers and scientists. Together and separately, they travelled through India between 1854 and 1857. Adolf, who, having become separated from his brothers, attempted to return to Germany not by sea but overland, was captured near Kashgar and beheaded without trial at the Khan’s court on charges of spying for China.
