A remarkable travel diary by the Elberfeld entrepreneur Henry Theodore Böttinger, reproduced in its entirety in handwritten form. In 1888–89, Böttinger undertook a round-the-world journey, the impressions of which he recorded in this privately printed volume in the form of a comprehensive handwritten diary. - With a handwritten dedication by Böttinger to Carl and Hans Duisberg on the flyleaf, dated Christmas 1889. The dedication refers to his connection with Carl Duisberg (1861–1935), who later became Director-General of Bayer-Werke, and his son Hans. - The industrialist Henry Theodore Böttinger (1848–1920), later von Böttinger, was a key figure in the early history of Bayer. As the son-in-law of the company’s founder, Friedrich Bayer, he joined the management of the paint factories formerly known as Friedr. Bayer & Co. in Elberfeld in 1882/83, where, together with Friedrich Bayer Jr. and Carl Duisberg, he formed the key management trio. He shared a close personal and business friendship with Duisberg (see NDB IV [1959], p. 181 ff.).
