(Corners and edges rubbed, slightly bumped; back cover more heavily stained; top head torn. Edges show red stains, likely due to the cover dye; title page and front cover have stains along the top edge. Otherwise, the interior is slightly browned. Minimal signs of age.)
Henze IV, 588. - First edition. - A colonial-era travelogue and account of the author’s experiences during his stay in what was then Melanesia. The entomologist and natural history dealer Carl Ribbe (1860–1934) “traveled to establish entomological and ethnographic collections in the Malay Archipelago and Western New Guinea from 1882 to 1886, and in the Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomon Islands from 1893 to 1896. His magnum opus was yet another small light in the darkness that still largely shrouded the remote archipelago; it is valuable for its insights into the nature and people of the islands in the Bougainville Strait and the New Georgia Group (particularly Rubiana and Vella Lavella, where R. discovered a mud volcano emitting sulfur fumes)” (Henze). - Includes the following maps: Solomon Islands, Bougainville Strait, New Georgia.
