Forbes 2045; Forster 81; Hill 1325; Judd 143. - In 1848, Perkins sailed to Hawaii on the ‘Planet’, an American whaling ship, where he lived for about two years. He subsequently spent some time on Bora Bora, Raiatea and Tahiti. As well as detailed accounts of whaling, the book also contains one of the earliest descriptions of ‘surfing’, which Perkins tried out himself and describes in great detail (pp. 196–197).
