With a engraved title vignette, a engraved header vignette, 13 copperplate maps (4 folded, 7 double-sheet size) and 21 double-sheet size copperplate plates. 4 leaves, XVI pp., 333 pp., 1 unnumbered page. Parchment with a handwritten title on the spine and coloured edges.
(Slightly worn. Inside: slightly tanned and with age spots; towards the end, from p. 329 onwards, the edges are slightly more tanned.)
Sabin 1637; Borba de Moraes 38; Cox I, 49–50. – The first French edition of the famous travelogue was first published in 1748. It mainly describes South America, the Pacific Islands and the Philippines. - “This famous and ill-fated expedition, … was sent to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America. [ …] Walter’s account of the voyage is a model of what such literature should be” (Cox).
