First edition of this important travel account from northern Turkey. Richard Leonhard (1870–1916), a geographer and geologist from Breslau, was director of the German Archaeological Institute in Istanbul and undertook three expeditions to Asia Minor. The ‘Leonhard Trail’ in present-day Turkey is named after him. The journeys described in this volume mainly concern that part of Asia Minor which bore this name in antiquity and the Middle Ages. ‘The ancient name must be reinstated, as the Turks have not coined any geographical names for the area’ (see Preface).
