The plates featuring views, portraits, scenes of daily life, costumes, implements, birds, fish and shells. - Commodore Perry ‘led a squadron to Japan in 1852–54 on the orders of the US Government to bring about the reopening of that country’s ports, which had been closed to foreign nations for two centuries. He achieved this by concluding the Treaty of Kanagawa (31 March 1854), which ceded the two ports of Shimoda (in southern Honshu) and Hakodate (in southern Hokkaido) to the Americans’ (Henze). - Excluding the third volume, published under a different title (United States Japan Expedition. Observations on the zodiacal light ... made chiefly on board the U.S. steam frigate Mississippi ... by George Jones).
