A rare monograph on the art of the Marquesas Islands that remains fundamental to this day. Based on the author’s field research during the Bayard-Dominick Expedition (1920–21), this study focuses in particular on ornamentation, carving and tattooing as central forms of expression in Marquesan culture. With an introduction by the Polynesian scholar E. S. Craighill Handy. – From the library of the ethnologist and sociologist Wilhelm Emil Mühlmann (1904–1988); a note of ownership dated 1938 on the blank half-title page.
Enclosures: The book is accompanied by a handwritten summary of the contents with a typewritten fair copy by W. E. Mühlmann (2 sheets in total), presumably produced for study or teaching purposes. Furthermore, two sheets containing handwritten notes by a previous owner are inserted into the cover. Also enclosed is a 13-sheet (or a copy) of the lecture ‘Megalithism and the Social Order in Polynesia, with particular reference to the Marquesas Islands’, delivered by Dieter Goetze during the winter semester of 1967/68 at the chair of Prof. K. Jettmar (Institute of Sociology and Ethnology, Heidelberg).
