Inspiriert von Marcel Duchamps Reproduktionen und Multiples von „La boite-en-valise“ (die Kiste im Koffer) machte sich Copley 1966 daran, eine neue Form des Kunstjournals zu schaffen. Er lud eine Vielzahl von Künstlern, Schriftstellern und Musikern ein, ein Kunstwerk einzureichen, das reproduziert und ohne Kommentar in einer Box-Sammlung veröffentlicht werden sollte, die im Abonnement per Postversand in einer Auflage von 2000 Exemplaren erhältlich war. Der bewusst mehrdeutige Titel „S.M.S.”, der ein Insiderwitz zwischen Copley und seinem Anwalt war, stand für „Shit must stop".
