For its upcoming spring auction, Venator & Hanstein has a few rare pieces on offer the likes of which have been on the market only very infrequently during the past years.
Protected by a book – enclosed as a leporello – a 19.3 x 401 cm first print of "Tabula Peutingeriana“ from 1598 has survived the ages. It is said that the print run was about 250 for this antique map, which is part of the UNESCO Memory of the World program. It represents the only surviving road map dating back to Antiquity in the form of an ‘itinerarium pictum‘ showing the world known at that time from Britain to Ceylon with a road network of about 200,000 km in length. It comes together with the first monograph on this topic by Marcus Welser (Estimate € 15,000).
An early testimony to the flourishing iron-goods industry in the Bergisches Land around 1800 is the tool and iron goods catalogue from Exporthaus Peter Frohn, a company based in Remscheid. Its vast product portfolio is shown in over 1,070 watercoloured drawings on 133 sheets, ranging from tools to household goods such as locks, folding knives and thimbles to waffle irons and skates (5,000).
An autograph by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe from the “Zahme Xenien. VII“ belongs to the polemical poems against Newton and his disciples. This four-liner was not published until after the poet’s death (10,000). Other autographs in this auction are e.g. from Arthur Schopenhauer, Voltaire or Sigmund Freud.
The various facets of Rome’s architecture are the subjects of an anthology of four works – unique in this combination - by Joachim and Johann Jacob Sandrart with a total of over 160 splendid views (6,600). The unusual botanical work “Naauwkeurige Beschryving der Aardgewassen“ by Abraham Munting contains 243, partially coloured, copper engravings. This is from the first and only posthumously published edition of this work (12,000).
In the Literature segment, a beautiful, complete copy of the work “Der Fruchtbringenden Gesellschaft Nahmen, Vorhaben, Gemählde und Wörter“ by Ludwig Fürst von Anhalt-Köthen will be available. This specimen is particularly attractive due to the revealed names by a contemporary hand of the symbolically represented persons (24,000). The German baroque literature also includes works by Gryphius, E.W. Happel, Harsdörffer, A. Olearius, Angelus Silesius or the poems of the Silesian Helicon.
Another highlight is a copy of the German translation of one of the most famous novels in world literature, “Das Leben und die gantz ungemeine Begebenheiten des weltberuffenen Engelländers Robinson Crusoe“ (Part 1 in a 2nd edition and Part 2 of the 1st edition) (12,000). The German Romantics are represented by names such as Arnim, Hölderlin, Novalis, Fr. Schlegel and W. Fr. Waiblinger.
Especially worth mentioning among the more than 200 catalogue numbers of old masters’ prints are etchings by Rembrandt, among them “A cavalry fight“ (10,000) or “Bust of an old woman in a high head-dress bound round the chin“ (3,000), as well as individual sheets from Piranesi’s “Carceri“ series in their first state (3,000 each).

From a special collection there are offered more than 20 drawings and prints by Karl Hofer.
The complete series of “Look at it on a rainy day“ by Friedensreich Hundertwasser in the original illustrated wooden box is one of the highlights in terms of price (10,000 €).
About 300 manuscripts (letters and postcards) by Horst Janssen addressed to his girlfriend Claudia Schunke and richly furnished with water colours, drawings and collages, are divided in more than 30 catalogue numbers (400 to 7,500 €).
A small collection of works by Marino Marini in 18 lots catch our eye (400 to 2,000 €). As in the last auction Venator & Hanstein offers a comprehensive set of prints from the estate of Christian Schad (400 to 600 €).
The portfolio “Graphein“ by Günther Uecker with 12 embossed prints marks another highlight (10,000 €). The attention should also be drawn to the works of Thomas Virnich: “Sonorous violin case“ from the year 1989 (1,500 €), “Viking Horn“ of 1992 (2,000 €), the wall object “Italy“ (2,000 €) and three other unique items.
Among the books on modern art, the work “Schreibzeit“ (1999) by Hanne Darboven has to be mentioned. In a total of 33 mostly large-sized volumes this edition documents the quintessence of Darboven’s artistic work (7,500 €). Furthermore a printed sketch book “Prinzip” by A.R. Penck, in which the artist additionally has signed all pages and made some sketches (2,400 €), as well as the amusing and early exhibition catalogue “Polke/Richter” from the year 1966 (1,600 €) should attract attention.
